On Monday 18 June, at 3pm, the national Traveller organisations will see Traveller Pride Week launched by the Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin, Andrew Montague in a ceremony at Dublin’s Mansion House.

Today’s Press Release:

Event: Launch of Traveller Pride Week

Mansion House, Dawson Street Dublin 2

Monday 18 June 3.00pm

-Begins-
Traveller Pride Week 2012 will be launched today (Monday 18 June) at a ceremony in Dublin’s Mansion House.

The Lord Mayor of the City of Dublin, Andrew Montague, will formally launch the week of celebration, culture and discussion, assisted by John Joe Nevin, the Traveller Olympian who will represent Ireland at London 2012.

Speaking ahead of the launch, the Lord Mayor said:

‘As this year is the European year for Active Ageing, and Intergenerational Solidarity, it is an honour for me to host the launch of Traveller Pride Week. In my term as Lord Mayor I’ve spoken of the increasing diversity in our city and valuing it. Travellers have been an integral part of Irish life and the life of this city and this week we can show our solidarity and respect for their culture and traditions. Intergenerational solidarity is part of pride and how the Traveller culture survives. This week is a week in which all Irish people should celebrate and value the rich contributions that Travellers have made to Irish life in this City and throughout the country.’

Martin Collins, co-director of Traveller Pride Week lead organiser Pavee Point, said:

‘This week will showcase the best of the Traveller community – all across the country, Travellers and Traveller organisations have allied with local interagency groups, other NGOs and one another to tell the world of the important and valuable work they’re doing. We’ll make it clear this week how proud we are of our community, how proud we are of our country and of the diversity of events Travellers have planned for the week.’
Travellers, representatives of Traveller organisations and their supporters from around the country will attend the event, to be joined by Traveller Olympian John Joe Nevin. A Traditional Traveller wagon will be in situ at the event.

-Ends-

Notes to editors:
1. Traveller Pride Week is led this year by Pavee Point. The week is jointly organised by the Irish Traveller Movement, the National Traveller Women’s Forum. Minceirs Whiden, Involve, National Traveller Money Advice and Budgeting Service, Exchange House and the Parish of the Travelling People. It receives funding from the Department of Justice and Equality.
2. The week promises a packed schedule of seminars, celebrations, performance and drama across Ireland, with highlight events in the capital.
3. For more information on attending these events, please contact Ben Archibald at Pavee Point Travellers’ Centre.

Traveller Pride Week 2011 is shaping up, with some eleven events planned as far afield as Galway, Navan and West Cork and one special secret invitation only event…

Traveller Pride Week kicks off on 1 December 2011 with the third annual Traveller Pride Awards – a recognition of Travellers’ contribution to their own community and Irish society. The artistic highlights of the week are performances of ‘The Trailer of Bridget Dinnigan’ hosted by the Irish Traveller Movement in Ballymun, and a celebration of Traveller Children’s art hosted by Meath Traveller Workshops in Navan.

Policy and Traveller issues such as drug use in the community, violence against women and the state of Traveller health are addressed at three seperate events hosted by Pavee Point Travellers Centre, while Traveller enterprise and engagement has two events, in Mount Merrion, Dún Laoghaire and Co. Galway.

West Cork Travellers’ is organizing an event to provide a space for Travellers from West Cork to come together and be proud of who we are and what we have achieved.

The theme is sports and mental health and we hope to celebrate the achievement of Travellers from West Cork in various sports as well as highlight the contribution that sports can make to positive mental health. We have several sportsmen and women who have won local, national and international awards in Weightlifting, Road Bowling, Kickboxing, Fishing and Soccer who will be honoured at the event.

Some of the sports-people will speak on the day, including one man for whom sport has been a key part of supporting his mental health. We’ll also hear a talk on nutrition from a trainer, have a healthy lunch and then enjoy one of two activities on offer in the afternoon: a beginner’s team road-bowling lesson/tournament and a yoga class.

The Trailer of Bridget Dinnigan, a new adaptation of Federico García Lorca‘s The House of Bernarda Alba, conceived and directed by Dylan Tighe, written by Catherine Joyce and Dylan Tighe in collaboration with, and featuring, 11 Irish Traveller women from Blanchardstown Traveller Development Group.

Following the critical success of its run in Project Arts Centre, June 2010 The Trailer of Bridget Dinnigan returns to wow audiences as the key event of Traveller Pride Week 2011. The show is the result of an experimental 2-year process of research, development, adaptation and collaboration between theatre-maker and writer Dylan Tighe, Traveller activist Catherine Joyce, 11 Traveller women from (BTDG) and a creative team of leading contemporary theatre artists. This production updates Lorca’s classic Spanish tragedy from the 1930’s to a present-day Travellers’ halting site and features 11 Traveller women as performers.

Theatre-maker Dylan Tighe (Director of No Worst There is None, The Stomach Box, Winner Best Production 2009 Irish Times Theatre Awards) approached BTDG with the idea to translate and adapt The House of Bernarda Alba from Spanish to the speech and world of Irish Traveller women. He then engaged in a period of consultation and collaboration with Catherine Joyce and the women of the BTDG to create a radical new version of this classic tragedy. Initial work was conducted under a research and development award from CREATE and this remount takes place thanks to the Arts Council of Ireland’s Touring Award.

This production takes place in Axis Arts Centre Ballymun bringing with it bus loads of audiences from across the country. It is a unique opportunity to witness a radical new artistic collaboration between Traveller women and leading contemporary theatre artists and promises to be a major event in Irish Theatre and of Traveller Pride Week 2011.

What the press said in 2010:

In its focus on tensions surrounding social mores, tradition, gender conventions and especially female experience, the piece manages to illuminate real issues affecting Traveller culture, often through a range of interesting design and directorial choices.

– Irish Theatre Magazine

In the process they’ve unearthed strong cultural affinities, and found a distinctive and evocative language to echo Lorca’s own…innovative – Irish Independent

The 3rd Traveller Pride Awards December 1st 2011

1 December 2010
12pm to 2pm

Dublin Civic Offices, Dublin 8

The third Traveller Pride Awards, which mark the achievements of Irish Travellers across the island of Ireland in a variety of areas will be held at a ceremony in Dublin on December 1st. The awards will be presented in ten categories in total, including the overall Traveller Pride 2011 Award.

The aim of the awards is to celebrate Traveller achievements across the island of Ireland and the contributions that Travellers make to their own community to Irish society. The Awards also highlight some of the obstacles that exist for Travellers in Irish society. The ultimate aim is to instil pride, increase expectations and celebrate Travellers’ undoubted positive contribution to Irish life – and also the pride and determination one must have in order to succeed as a Traveller.

This year sees awards being presented for achievement in:

education,

community,

enterprise and employment,

youth,

sport,

music,

culture,

with an overall winner selected from these categories.

Rosaleen McDonagh, the recipient of the Overall Pride Award in 2010 and who was presented with a beautifully crafted cast bronze commemorative award sculpture said,

“Traveller pride is pouring out of my pores. Platitudes like this don’t normally mean anything to me but when it comes from your own people, your own community it is something special. A community is not a community if it doesn’t have older people, disabled people and gay people involved in its struggle. That’s why I love Traveller politics”.

The Traveller pride winners are recognised for their passion, commitment and hard work and that in recognising their accomplishments the Awards will hopefully inspire Travellers across the island of Ireland in other areas to continue with the work they do or to encourage other Travellers to participate in projects or activities that promote the positives of Traveller identity in Irish society.

The Traveller Pride Awards not only aim to recognise achievement and celebrate Traveller role models within the community, but to project positive images of the Traveller community to the wider public, who are often deprived the opportunity to engage with Travellers or see the contributions that Travellers make to their own community and society at large. The Traveller Pride Awards aims to promote positive images of Travellers to counteract negative stereotyping that so often appears in mainstream media

The awards are being held in Dublin Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8, and will start at 12pm SHARP. There is no charge for the event but places must be booked in advance by contacting the Irish Traveller Movement on 01-6796577
